Want a night in Lawrence, KU beats UConn

  • The Little Ball of Hate was hoping for a 2-fer: a KU volleyball win to advance in the NCAA Tournament, and a basketball victory against the defending national champs. What a night in Lawrence, Kansas.

  • Unfortunately KU volleyball lost to Penn State in the NCAA tournament. The Jayhawks battled and took it to a fifth set, but could not pull out a victory.

Clingan vs. Dickinson, a great big man battle. At half, Clingan had 5 Pts. 4 Rebs compared to Dickinson’s 10 pts. And 5 Rebs.

First half thoughts

  • A great start for KU, grabbing a 15-6 lead. UConn’s half-court offense is nonexistent. Great defense for Kansas, and it seems I no adjustments by UConn and might have been a little rattled by the atmosphere in Allen Fieldhouse. There aren’t a lot of teams who can handle that kind of homecourt craziness.

  • On offense, Dajuan Harris hitting a three is always a good sign to start. Hunter Dickinson hits his second three early in the game, which made him 10-for-15 from three-point land for the season.

  • UConn’s Tristen Newton was their only offense in the first 6 min of the game.  He scores 16 points in the first half, which was more than half of his team’s points.

  • Kansas’ defense causes a clock violation turnover with 6:48. At least five times, UConn’s shot clock went down below :05. Three times Newton bailed them out with an impossible three-pointer.

I like KU’s shooting balance compared to UConn’s. The Huskies shot a lot of threes, that kind of offense usually doesn't last.

Second half thoughts: The Huskies make a charge but THE PHOG always wins

  • I saw three over the back no calls against UConn. Did I miss something in the offseason? Was there a decision that an Over-the-back foul doesn’t exist anymore?

  • An 11-0 run by KU gives the Jayhawks a 61-54 lead with 4:08 left. Keys to the run were Kevin McCullar’s two three pointers.

KJ Adams throws down another dunk. Adams ends with 18 points, 5 rebounds.

  • KJ Adams, who had a great game, finishes it off hitting two free throws. I think it’s going to be crucial for Adams to be solid at the FT line. If we go far in March, we will need Adams, McCullar, Dickinson and Harris to hit free throws late in games.

Seriously??!!

Tidbits

  • Deion Sanders named the Sportsperson of the year? I get it, he did raised a Colorado football program from the ashes, but really? They finished 4-8 right? I mean Nebraska won more games than that. And usually the Sportsperson is given that honor because his or her actions help others. It seems Coach Prime is looking out for himself. Oh and by the way, he’ll be gone in three years.

  • No. 1 Purdue and Northwestern go into OT in Evanston, Illinois, and the Wildcats get the upset win 92-88. Northwestern players are not very disciplined down the wire. First of all, fouling a Purdue player while shooting a three, then another player taunting the Purdue bench? Fellas you know you have to play the Boilermakers again right? But for the second consecutive year, Northwestern beats Purdue, and both time when they were ranked No. 1. And wait a minute, Northwestern has a player whose name is Boo Buie? Frankenstein and Purdue lose to Boo Buie, lol!!!

  • So far this season Kansas has played Kentucky, Marquette, Tennessee and Connecticut, all ranked teams. The Jayhawks are 3-1 in those games, not too shabby.

Ted Lasso had good advice for Kansas fans.

  • At Allen Fieldhouse, it's alway Starwatch. Last night Ted Lasso (AKA Jason Sudeikis) and Sue Bird (Legendary WNBA basketball player) were in the house.

  • With Purdue and No. 3 Marquette losing, looks like Arizona will move up to No. 1 after winning today and KU moves up from No. 5 to No. 2 after beating No. 4 UConn.

  • The Orioles have shown interest in a closer while Bautista recovers from Tommy John surgery. There are Os fans who say the team needs help in other areas. And while I agree, if they want to go on a long postseason run next year they need a back end closer so all the other bullpen pieces fall into place. And a front line starter is needed, but they have PLENTY of money for both.
